I over-explained myself to someone who had already made up a version of me in their head. And let me tell you what that did to me. I exhausted myself. I overstimulated myself. I overworked my brain trying to make someone understand me. Just for them to still walk away with that same made-up version of me in their head 🙂 And the truth is… it’s not because they can’t understand my point of view. IT’S BECAUSE THEY DON’T WANT TO! Whew… and that moment took me right back to the old version of me. And I didn’t like how that felt at all. But I’m telling y’all this because I like to be transparent. 99.9999% of the advice I give on here? I’ve lived it. I’ve felt it. I’ve had to grow through it. Do not exhaust yourself trying to defend your character to people who have already decided who you are. Let them think what they want. | 2026-04-08 19:42 | Sidecar | 2026-02-28 14:37:11 | “The Swan’s Journey” Watercolor Years ago, before taking any art classes, I tried to paint this same vase of hydrangeas in watercolor. (Swipe to see that early painting.) I’m so happy with the progress I’ve made through practice and classes. And even more than that, I just love expressing my creativity. And it’s a bit poetic that the two progress paintings are of swans. I didn’t plan it that way, but I’ll lean into the metaphor. As I finished the last painting for #28februaryflowers I also started reflecting on all I have learned in these last 28 days of showing up, painting and sharing (even when a painting didn’t turn out how I envisioned). The experience has also highlighted things I want to work on and practice more — like values and certain kinds of flowers. Doing this challenge has really given me a lot of clarity about what I want to focus on next in my art journey. Thanks for joining me on this journey of #28februaryflowers2026. These paintings started out as random swashes of acrylic gouache on a gelli plate. Then I used watercolors, pen and gel ink to finish the flowers. There are so many different varieties of amaryllis in shades of white, pink, coral and red. This was so hard, y’all. I tried three different paintings (actually 5 since one attempt was a class where you paint four bouquets on a single sheet of paper) trying to capture tartan. I may go back to one of them — a tablescape — with collaged tartan elements. But I’m going to need to let it percolate for a while. So I’m really excited to see how others interpreted today’s #28februaryflowers prompt, “Tartan.” Also my husband said he sees a face in this painting, and now I can’t unsee it. So I may have to fix that. He said the face reminds him of my grandma, who was a painter, too. I have memories of both my mom and my grandma drying sheets and towels on a clothesline in the summer. Memories of running through the clean laundry with my cousins, brothers and neighborhood friends. Memories of handing mom and grandma clothespins from the bag and helping pull the crisp, dried linens off the line. I was a bit rushed in painting it, and then I had to stop midway through to go to an appointment. And then I ran out of light, and I needed cold meds… All of which probably affect my feelings and my execution of this painting. For Day 21, “Gingham” of #28februaryflowers , I was inspired to try a paint-over-collage technique that @inspiredbycharm did for Circus day. (Michael’s painting is wonderful! ❤️) And I just happened to have some green-and-white gingham tissue paper from @weekendcraft And an overhead reference photo of spring blooms from my garden in yummy colors. Regardless of my indifferent feeling about this painting, it was a fun experiment, and I definitely learned some things. These vibrant, odiferous plants are among some of the first to bloom in the spring in wetlands and swampy areas, sometimes even growing out of the snow. After I saw photos of bright yellow western skunk cabbage, I knew I’d found my muse for Day 17 of the #28februaryflowers challenge, “Skunk.” I created this vibrant, impressionistic piece atop a chaos layer of greens, blues and purples. The yellow flowers are a combo of collage bits, acrylic paint skins and paint. I let a lot of the painting’s background layer show through because it just felt like water and wildflowers and vegetation.
