Although I don’t agree with all the themes of this musical, I did enjoy the high energy, Y2K music and vocals, the set and lighting design, and the comedy! I also love the historical aspect of taking real and literary figures and intertwining them into a new “what if” kind of story. It’s very cleverly written! As a cherry on top, I got to witness a Birmingham native (that I had the privilege of growing up doing theatre with) living out her dream! Go Nicole Lamb! I absolutely loved all the little nods to the University of Tennessee woven throughout the hotel. Our room keys were designed like student IDs for Phillip Fulmer and Reggie White, which was such a fun touch. Between the bright Tennessee orange accents, the Smokey dog mascot details, and the layered mix of patterns and textures, the whole place felt playful without losing its charm. The framed memorabilia throughout the hotel was incredibly impressive, and the indoor and outdoor murals were beautifully painted. One of my favorite details was the boat-inspired check-in desk that made you feel like you were floating right down the Tennessee River. I got to dress up with friends, meet some sweet people, and enjoy all the fun that comes with the fastest two minutes in sports. I did pick a horse to win based entirely on its name and the general vibe it gave off… which turns out is not a strong betting strategy 😅 I’m pretty sure my horse finished somewhere near the back of the pack, but thankfully I was just there for the fun, the hats, and the company. Playing a comedic relief villain for the first time was everything I hoped it would be, and it felt pretty incredible to be back on stage again. I am so grateful for Cullman Community Theatre and the opportunities it provides for people like me to step outside our everyday lives and participate in something we might not otherwise get to do. Even more special is seeing the impact it has on the kids involved. CCT gives them the chance to learn new skills, build friendships, develop discipline, and perform in front of large audiences. This was the early 2000s—no smartphone apps, no algorithm-curated feeds. My mom sat at our desktop computer for HOURS researching scholarships, summer and winter enrichment programs, and financial aid strategies for ambitious students pursuing Ivy League education. She’d dig through scholarship databases, read forums, and print out pages of opportunities. She found merit-based scholarships I didn’t know existed, fully-funded high school programs at elite universities, and financial aid pathways that made Harvard and Cornell accessible. Her research became our competitive advantage. While other families assumed these schools were financially out of reach, my mom was finding the programs that leveled the playing field. Most importantly she helped me find Harvard’s Undergraduate Minority Recruitment program which was key to me meeting Tanya Thompson. She was the final piece of the puzzle that sold me on wanting to go to Harvard. She was brilliant, yet humble and empowering. The timing was also perfectly aligned with God’s favor because this was when Harvard started to truly expand their need based financial aid program. So here is my challenge to you: If my mom could do this in 2003 with basic Google search, imagine what YOU can do today with ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, and AI tools that can search, summarize, and create personalized scholarship lists in seconds.
