Iāve had this trip planned for months, and it feels surreal to already be halfway through it. I grew up in this area, so much of it feels deeply familiar, though many of the places weāve been exploring are new to me too. When you live somewhere long enough, itās easy to stay within the boundaries of your own little day-to-day comfort zone and never fully discover what surrounds you. In between treatments, Iāve been writing new memoir pieces and editing my manuscript. As many of you know, Iām currently seeking literary agent representation for my memoir about growing up chronically ill. Iāve had two literary agents request the manuscript (!) and thereās something especially meaningful about working on the story in the very place where it began. 1. Writing at @katonahreadingroom. 2ā3. Enjoying the slower pace of suburban life. 4. My mom being an absolute saint and going to @sdessenās event at @strandbookstore after driving four hours round trip to @drmyriahhinchey to get a book signed for me while I rested at our Airbnb. Sarahās work inspired my writing as a teenagerāand still does today. 5ā7. Wandering around Katonah which is basically Stars Hollow come to life. 8ā12. @stewleonards, the grocery store that somehow ended up with an entire chapter in my memoir. It expanded my imagination and taught me that the customer is always right. 13. @long.ridge.school, where I went to elementary school, and another place that found its way into my memoir. 14. In honor of the forthcoming sequel, I recreated my favorite scene: the final moment, when Andy @annehathaway tosses her phone into the Fontaine des Fleuves in Paris. Itās my favorite scene not just because I love her dress (itās my favorite outfit she wears) but because itās the moment she chooses herself. I felt so sick of myself that if I didnāt make somethingāanythingāI was proud of, I thought I might go a little crazy. So I dragged my fatigued, nauseous, makeup-less self into my neighborās backyardāthe one with the pretty light and the flowering trees. I figured, at the very least, Iād touch some nature and get some sun on my skin. (And to be clear, when Iām really unwell, I do let myself fully rest. This wasnāt that.) I had these film stills from Atonement in mind, and a scene from The Virgin Suicidesāthat hazy, feminine, almost dreamlike stillness. Later, in a fleeting moment of clarity, I remembered the cover of The Phoebe Variations by @janehamiltonwriter (shot by @georgia_kokolis). I had just read it. And I realized I may have been subconsciously referencing it all along. The images I made felt both familiar but also different. And then my mind landed on one of my favorite quotes from Invisible Monsters by @chuckpalahniuk. āNothing of me is original. I am the combined effort of everyone Iāve ever known.ā We are all a culmination of every person, every quote, every picture, every song, every book, every film, every conversation weāve ever absorbed. Nothing of us is original. Weāre thieves, stealing from what weāve seen, touched, and heard. And yet something happens in the translation. Take, for instance, the film Lady Bird. My mom and I watched it together a few years after it was released. (I saw it for the first time alone when I indulged myself to an at-home matinee one lazy afternoon.) It struck me as deeply nuanced, meaningful, and profound. Greta Gerwig captures something so specific about late ā90s, early 2000s adolescence. The fact that itās set in her hometown of Sacramento makes it feel even more intimate, like Gretaās real teenage memories. The romantic mundane. I love the way the film captures both sides of tenderness. Even in the tension between Lady Bird and her mother, thereās something steady underneath it all. Love, expressed imperfectly, but still unconditional. My mom, on the other hand, found it deeply depressing. As a neurodivergent highly sensitive person, I find beauty in odd places. It used to overwhelm me as a child, being affected so strongly everywhere I went, like my life was a radio turned all the way up with no way to dial it down. But now, I like that about myself. | 2026-06-04 15:24 | Video | 2026-05-26 19:55:00 | i know i look exactly like what i been through, but thatās what the IEP (Individualized Education Program) process will do to youš« meetings after meetings. so much back and forth, and a lot of unnecessary banter about what we know is best for our daughter. these meetings are often frustrating, emotional and can be scary, especially if you arenāt familiar with educational terms or the processes that the school system follows if youāre in a similar situation, i encourage you to do a few things: 1ļøā£ do NOT give up. you child needs you to keep fighting for them. 2ļøā£ find a parent advocate who can attend meetings with you, help you understand documents and speak on your behalf. ours has been a lifesaver and helped me show up to meetings with a lot more confidence 3ļøā£ trust yourself and your gut! dont let teachers and school reps brush off your childās disabilities or needs. theyāre often doing it to cut down on their workload or money theyāll have to spend. hold them accountable! 4ļøā£ inform them that youāre audio recording every meeting, in writing and in advance, and have your recorder ready. also, be sure to take notes - i always have Google Docs open (they usually donāt allow notetakers inside these meetings). lastly, if you have a feeling that your child has differences, SEEK GUIDANCE IMMEDIATELY. donāt wait around. āļøsave this post #iep #specialneedsfamily #autismmoms #blackandautistic autisticgirls | #iep, #specialneedsfamily, #autismmoms, #blackandautistic | 262 | patricecameau | - | Open Link |
