Black women are nearly 60% more likely to have high blood pressure, and it’s not just genetics or lifestyle. Chronic stress, living in constant fight-or-flight, being dismissed in medical settings, and delayed preventative care all put extra strain on the heart over time. Black women also experience worse heart outcomes and are more likely to be misdiagnosed or diagnosed later, especially when symptoms are subtle. Fatigue. Dizziness. Stomach pain. Anxiety-like symptoms. These don’t always look like the “classic” heart signs we’re taught to expect, so they’re often brushed off. Heart disease is the number one killer of women, yet awareness is still low. Especially for Black women who are often taught to push through pain, take care of everyone else, and not complain. It also feels important to honor the Black pioneers who changed heart care as we know it. People like Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, who performed one of the first successful heart surgeries, and Vivien Thomas, whose work revolutionized cardiac surgery and saved countless lives, even though he went uncredited for years. Their legacy reminds us how much Black excellence has shaped medicine, even when it wasn’t acknowledged. And we have to talk about stress. Racism, discrimination, financial pressure, and social standing all keep the body in survival mode. That kind of long-term stress isn’t just emotional. It’s physical. It changes how the heart functions. This is why self-advocacy matters. Ask the question. Track your symptoms. Get another opinion if you’re not being heard. No question is ever too dumb, and the one you’re scared to ask could save your life. Looking good is great! I love beauty. But the goal is to live long enough to enjoy it.
